About Melanie Bartlett
Online Marketing Executive
Melanie has loved to travel since she was a child, enjoying family camping holidays in France and slowly moving to the more adventurous the older she has got. From relaxing on an idyllic Maldivian island and exploring the Borneo jungle to shopping in New York and experiencing an amazing Kenya safari, she really has got the travel bug. She’s worked at Kuoni since 2006 as part of the marketing team and now heads up all of the online activity.
We put Mel through the big five…
1/ Where’s the best place you’ve ever stayed?
This is a really hard one but it would have to be in a tent in the middle of the Maasai Mara in Kenya. It was a luxury tent mind, with a running shower and electricity, but nothing beats laying in your bed listening to the animals literally the other side of the tent. We used to sit round the camp fire in the evening after a delicious camp fire cooked dinner with a glass of wine just enjoying the sights and sounds the night had to offer.
2/ What’s your oddest travel moment?
Watching a journalist have a love spell put on him by the local witch doctor in the middle of a small village in Kenya. We had been up exploring the mountains and just stopped in the village to say hello to the children as they ran out to greet us when our guide pointed out an old woman saying she was the local witch doctor, did anyone want a spell put on them. There was a small ceremony and some potion was put on his tongue that he then had to keep doing three times a day for a week. Within a month of being home he had a new girlfriend and they are still married to this day!
3/ What are your suitcase essentials?
Books – an absolute must. On a relaxing beach holiday I get through a book a day just lounging in the sun, so I’m always up for a good book recommendation. However, saying that I now have a small baby so I’m sure that will change and it will be all about packing everything and anything to keep her entertained.
4/ Have you had a perfect travel moment?
I’ve had a few but one that really stands out in my mind is on safari in Kenya. We had been out all afternoon and were just on our way back to camp for a sundowner when we came across a lioness with four cubs playing right in front of us. They carried on playing, then calmly walked alongside us so close that if I’d stuck my arm out of the jeep I could have touched them.
5/ Where’s next on your wishlist?
As you can maybe tell I absolutely love Kenya and my absolute dream would be to marry at Mara Bushtops, the exclusive Kuoni camp in the Maasai Mara. That may be a few more years away so I would definitely settle for a nice sandy beach for my daughter’s first overseas holiday, maybe in the Caribbean or Indian Ocean. Working in travel means the choices are endless and change on a daily basis!
